Team India's score of 16.1 very low: Yo-Yo test founder Jens Bangsbo

Jens Bangsbo, first introduced Yo-Yo test in sports to ascertain the physical fitness of the players.

Mumbai: Yo-Yo tests for Team India players, who have gone on a tour of Ireland and England, has recently become the point of discussions of late.

Jens Bangsbo, who first introduced Yo-Yo test in sports to ascertain the physical fitness of the player has now introduced another version to determine players' fitness.

Speaking exclusively over his mobile from Denmark, where the 61-year-old Dr. Jens Bangsbo (Ph.D) works as Professor of Human Physiology and Exercise Physiology and Head of Copenhagen Centre of Team Sports and Health at Copenhagen Centre of Team Sports and Health, said, "It is just another application. The players are not running to exhaustion just 5 minutes and heart rate is measured. It is a submaximal version which is also a very useful test to see the development. "

"The Yo-Yo tests were developed in the early nineties, as the sports with intermittent exercise patterns were lacking appropriate tests. The performance is assessed as the distance covered in the test. Between each shuttle, there is a 5-og 10-second rest period and the participant finishes the test when he/she twice have not been able to complete the shuttle within the given time (speed is progressively increasing)," the former Juventus and Denmark football team assistant coach added.

"It is useful to obtain an idea of the physical capacity of the player. The participants are running 20 meters back and forth as a Yo-Yo," he continued.

When asked, what is the ideal level for Asian players, Bangsbo says, "I am aware of the reference values for the football players, but level 16.1 (for Indian players) is rather low."
