Follow your instincts: Virat Kohli pens open letter to fans
Mumbai: Being the captain of the Indian cricket team is not an easy task these days. It is not just the players in the dressing room, who look up to the captain. The skipper has to be a role model for the entire country.
India Test captain Virat Kohli has set yet another example during the festive season, by addressing an emotional open letter to his fans.
Kohli wrote about the importance of taking bold decisions in his letter, saying that one must not regret not taking a decision, later on in life.
“People believe I know exactly how my decisions are going to turn out. And with our recent successes on the pitch, that belief is now probably sweeping the nation,” Kohli wrote in his open letter. “But here’s the truth: I don’t.
“When making an unconventional decision, I don’t know if it will turn out fine. All I know is, when the time comes, I have to make that bold move, without fear.”
He even drew comparison with the decisions that he took during the Adelaide Test against Australia in 2014, which India ended up losing after attempting to chase down a difficult 364 in the fourth innings.
Kohli, who was the stand-in captain at that time, as MS Dhoni was injured, believes that despite the fact that India lost, he does not hold any regrets in his mind, as his side played to win the game.
” Take the Adelaide test in 2014. Instead of a draw we played to win against the Australians. We lost. But do I regret that move,” asked Kohli in his letter.
“Not at all. Because I believe you’re better off living with the consequences of making a bold move, than not making one,” he wrote.
He also went on to state that the “mantra” that has kept him is to “follow my instincts, make my own choices”.
“Kyunki, kise pata kal hum kaun si manzil, kaun se mukaam paayenge (we never know what the future holds for us),” he wrote. “Par ek baat zaroor hai – agar bold nahin khelenge, toh kabhi na jaan paayenge (But one thing is for sure – if you don’t play bold, you’ll never know what we can achieve).”
