Stat attack: Australia win a Test match in India for the 1st time in 4,502 days
Pune: Australia completed a comprehensive victory over hosts India on a rank turner, taking a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, on Saturday.
While the Aussies have taken a crucial lead, India will have enough chances to make a comeback, as there are still three Tests to go.
A number of records (positive and negative) were broken by both the sides in the match, which ended with a little over two days remaining. We take a look at some of the key stats from the game:
• Steve O’Keefe (12-70) has the second best match-figures by a foreign player on Indian soil in Test cricket, after Ian Botham (13-106).
• Matt Renshaw became the youngest Australian to score a half century in India.
• Mitchell Stark contributed 96.36 per cent of the runs in the 55-run last-wicket stand he put up with Josh Hazlewood, in the first innings.
• India skipper Virat Kohli’s duck in the first innings was the first time he got out on zero, in his last 104 innings across all formats of the game in international cricket. The last time he got out for a duck was in an ODI in Cardiff.
• O’Keefe became the joint second in the table of bowlers who took the least amount of deliveries to pick up five wickets, against India. The Aussie spinner is tied with greats like Ernie Toshack and Imran Khan, who have all taken five wickets in 19 balls. Stuart Broad leads the list, having achieved the feat in 16 balls.
• India’s loss of the last seven wickets for just 11 runs in the first innings, is their lowest ever in this category.
• Ravichandran Ashwin is on the threshold of creating history, as he is just 10 wickets away from becoming the bowler to take the highest number of wickets during the course of a season. Dale Steyn currently leads the list with 78 from 12 matches.
• Australia skipper Steve Smith has scored five centuries in as many consecutive Tests against India.
• Smith’s century was his first in India, second in Asia, fifth against India, eighth outside Australia, 10th as a captain, and 18th in Test cricket.
• Virat Kohli’s score of 13 in the Pune Test is his lowest so far at home, in Tests where he has played in both innings.
• India faced only 74 overs across both innings in the Pune Test. This is the lowest number of overs they have played in a home Test.
• Australia have won a Test match in India for the first time in 4,502 days.
