Mohammed Siraj thanks his coach and parents

Siraj has been named in the Indian side for the Twenty20 series against New Zealand.

Hyderabad: Not long ago Mohammed Ghouse was swinging his autorickshaw in and out of Hyderabad streets, ferrying passengers for a living. Now, his son Siraj is in the fast lane. Siraj has been named in the Indian side for the Twenty20 series against New Zealand.

Siraj, who made his first class debut in 2015, has quickly risen up the ranks after impressive stints in the Rest of India and Duleep Trophy sides. Later, he was promoted to the India ‘A’ side and played series against South Africa (away) and New Zealand ‘A’ (at home). So far, Siraj has only played 14 first class games and taken 53 wickets that include a five-wicket haul and four instances of 4-fors.

Now, the game has changed. “Whenever I get a chance, I want to give my 100 per cent and cement my spot in the Indian team,” he says. There must be many who helped him along the way, but Siraj picks out one. “Bharat Arun Sir (Hyderabad’s coach last season and current India bowling coach) has been very, very supportive. I have received a lot of help and guidance from him. He has shaped up a lot of things as far as my bowling is concerned,” he says.

Also, there has been huge help back home. “My parents have supported me so much despite financial constraints. They encouraged me to pursue my passion and here I am.”

Having climbed his way up to the top of the cricket ladder, the fast bowler has some quick points for less privileged players. “Put your talents to good use and chase your dreams. Discipline, hard work and attitude will surely take you places,” he says.
