'Arun Lal's cancer surgery done keeping his TV appearance in mind'

India's 59-year-old former opening batsman underwent a cancer surgery for his jaw in Kolkata's Tata Medical Centre (TMC).

Mumbai: Arun Lal's radiation therapy for his cancer surgery will start within a week's time, according to his surgeon Dr Pattatheyil Arun.

India's 59-year-old former opening batsman underwent a cancer surgery for his jaw in Kolkata's Tata Medical Centre (TMC).

"He has been given a discharge recently and is recovering well," Dr Arun, who heads the Head and Neck Oncology Department at TMC and also performed the surgery on Lal, added.

"It took more than 14 hours for the replacement of the jaw because Arun Lal is a TV personality-man and a lot of care was required to be taken to retain his appearance. Lot of attention on his cosmetic appearance was also required," the surgeon added.

The doctor gave credit to his team comprising Pratik Jain, Neha Gupta, Phub Shering and Soumit Prasad for Lal's difficult but successful surgery.

"Like any other transplant, we removed the bone from his leg, muscles having blood vessels, tissues etc. and transplanted," he said.

"The treatment is not yet over. He needs some rest for the tissues and then come again for more treatment before you can see him and listen to his commentary. It is a difficult time for him before he’s able to come to his feet but yes, he will be able to recover fully.”

Later, speaking from his home, Lal said, "I am progressing well and will be able to do commentary in another two months time."
