Mumbai: The support staff comprising Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar were given a 45-day extension following the World Cup, covering the West Indies tour from August 3 to September 3.

The BCCI has invited fresh applications for the Indian cricket team's support staff, including the head coach, and incumbent Ravi Shastri will need to reapply once his contract expires after next month's tour of the West Indies.

The latest interesting addition to the list as per reports from Financial Express is Mahela Jayawardene who is apparently interested to take it over from Ravi Shastri as the team’s head coach.

Jayawardene presently is the coach of the most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians has won the title twice within three years under Jayawardene's guidance.

“Some of the candidates who are likely to apply for the post of the head coach are Gary Kirsten, Mahela Jayawardene and Tom Moody, the report in Financial Express read.

Jayawardene shares a decent bonding and camaraderie with Team India's vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who is also the skipper of Mumbai Indians.

There is also speculation about Tom Moody being the one more interested for the job after the Sunrisers Hyderabad ended his seven-year stint with the franchise a few days ago.
