Vijay Merchant Trophy: Tilak, Divesh go great guns

The lead helped Hyderabad pocket three points and emerge as the table toppers in the South zone group with 25 points.

Hyderabad: A brilliant double century by N. Thakur Tilak Varma and a quickfire ton from Divesh Singh helped Hyderabad take the first innings lead in a drawn match against Andhra in the South Zone Inter-State Vijay Merchant Trophy Cricket tournament at Shimoga.

The lead helped Hyderabad pocket three points and emerge as the table toppers in the South zone group with 25 points. Andhra had to settle for one point.

Tilak Varma retired hurt after smashing 202. In his prolonged innings, he dispatched 27 boundaries and two maximums. Southpaw Divesh was also on a roll before being dismissed at 141 which came off just 154 balls and included 20 fours and two sixes. Their knocks guided Hyderabad to a strong 467/9.

Meanwhile in the Cooch behar trophy U-19 match in Mysore, Bhagath Varma and Praneeth Raj’s fierce spells left Karnataka reeling at 47/7 at stumps on the third day.

Earlier, in response to Hyderabad’s total of 248, Karnataka were bundled out for 166 in the first innings.
