Sack Alastair Cook as England skipper: Geoffrey Boycott

There are calls to sack to Alastair Cook as England's Test skipper following team's 4-0 series defeat against India.

Mumbai: Few days after he did not pick any Indian’s in his all-time XI, former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has ripped apart England cricket side following their 4-0 series loss against India.

Boycott also asked England selectors to sack Alastair Cook as team’s Test skipper if he does not step down after England lost the Chennai Test by an innings and 75 runs on Tuesday.

With England taking on Australia in next year’s Ashes, Boycott said that the new England captain will need all the seven Tests to get on with the role.

“If we are to have a new captain, he needs all seven Tests to get his feet under the table. We don't want Alastair giving it up after three or four Tests," Boycott wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph.

Former England opener also was not pleased with the fact that Cook talked about the possible replacement at the top and his intentions to step down from the role of England captain even before the India series got over.

"This hasn't just happened. It must have been on his mind for some time. Normally, they sack losing generals, and he made a comment before the tour about how it might be his last," Boycott said.

“After we've lost the series, he says Joe Root is ready for captaincy, and nobody forced that out of him. Whoever captains in England this summer has seven Tests (against South Africa and West Indies) before the biggest series of all in the Ashes," he added.

While Root has not captained a side in county cricket or other formats of the game, Boycott did not feel that it would hamper his progress if he is appointed England skipper.

"(Andrew) Strauss has to make a decision, that's what he's paid for. What about the chairman Colin Graves, and the chief executive? They run the business, but the performance out here has been pathetic," Boycott said.

"England pay the coaches and the director of cricket fortunes, but nothing will happen. They will beat people in England on seaming pitches and everything in the garden will be rosy," concluded Boycott.
