Australia's David Warner reveals about 'speak English' spat with India's Rohit Sharma
Mumbai: Australia vice-captain David Warner on Wednesday revealed about the on-field spat with India’s Rohit Sharma, during an ODI between the two sides at Melbourne in early 2015.
During a tri-series match between the two heavyweights, Rohit Sharma had said something to Warner in hindi, which the latter did not understand and told Rohit to “speak english”.
“After the Rohit Sharma incident (I stopped). I felt I had a valid point there, because if I’m going to swear in a different language on the big screen, nobody is going to do something about it. But if I said what he was saying to me, in English, and you could lip read me — I’ll still get in trouble anyway,” the 30-year-old Warner said to ESPNcricinfo.
“That’s where I was really disappointed with what happened. Everybody interpreted it the way I actually said. It wasn’t being racist or anything like that. I just clearly wanted him to swear at me in English so everyone else could hear what he was saying,” the New South Wales batsman added.
The match was a part of a tri-series involving hosts Australia, England and India, which was eventually won by the current world champions.
Australia went on to win the match by four wickets, thanks to a fantastic six-wicket spell by Mitchell Starc and a well-played 96 by opener Aaron Finch. It was a tournament to forget for India, who finished in third place with just two points, due to a no result.
In the final, the hosts bowled out rivals England for 166 to complete a 112-run victory.
