Mayank Markande's father reveals reason behind his son's different surname

The 21-year-old was named in India's T20I squad for the upcoming home series against Australia.

Mumbai: "What's there in a name ?" is the famous quote by English poet William Shakespeare.

Ask this to Team India's new T20 player Mayank Markande's dad, who will explain why he and his wife are Bikram Sharma and Sundeep Sharma but his son has Markande surname.

"Markande is our original caste and we decided our only son to have this new surname", speaking exclusively over telephone from Patiala, he said.

"This new surname is derived from Markandeya gotra".

The 21-year-old was named in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming home series against Australia.

Meanwhile, the ancient story is like this: Markandeya was a son of great rishi Mrikandu. Markandeya was very intelligent but was destined to live for only 16 years. As he grew and getting on to be sixteen, Rishi became sadder and sadder.

But the boy worshiped Lord Shiva who ultimately blessed him with long life and he became a great rishi.

Coach remembered

Mayank's father didn't forget to call and compliment Munish Bali. It was coach Bali who had advised Mayank's father to allow him to continue play.

"Father wanted his son to be a doctor but then I said if he chooses medical line, won't get time to practice. I was sure about his success and he persisted with my advice", Bali, speaking over telephone from Punjab, said.

"Immediately after son's inclusion in the team, his dad telephoned to me and complimented for my advice".

Bali has worked with the women's team and was also a coach when Virat Kohli won World Cup with the U-19 team.
