ICC World Twenty20: Pakistan, Bangladesh is the new Ashes

Asian giants meet in their Group 2 Super 10 tie at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Mumbai: Not only temperature but tempers are also expected to rise when Bangladesh takes on Pakistan in the Group 2 match of the ICC World Twenty20 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The Pakistan-Bangladesh rivalry gained prominence after the latter’s recent surge in international cricket.

Bangladesh, earlier termed as minnows, turned the notion upside down with ODI series wins against India, South Africa and Pakistan last year.

They also knocked England out of the group stage in the ICC World Cup Down Under.

Keeping in mind the history behind Bangladesh’s independence which came in 1971 after fighting the liberation war against Pakistan, there is a lot of emotion involved in this particular World Cup encounter.

Earlier, Bangladesh beat Pakistan in the Asia Cup to reach the final.

The last time Bangladesh played at Eden Gardens was in 1990 against Sri Lanka in an ODI match.
