ICC World Twenty20: India lost to Kiwis in 2007 to become champions

Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led India can take inspiration from their 2007 turnaround and go on to win the ICC World Twenty20 2016.

Mumbai: The cricket fraternity, including the Indian cricket team fans, is in a shock following Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Team India’s 47-run defeat against New Zealand in Nagpur on Tuesday.

Blackcaps, under the leadership of Kane Williamson, extended their winning run to five games against India after Tuesday’s win at the Vidarbha Cricket Association.

The Kiwis, in the six games they have played against India, have won five whereas a game in Vizag in 2014 was a washout.

While the performance of the Indian batsmen remains a concern following a defeat, the Indian cricket team fans must not be disheartened despite New Zealand’s victory.

Although the 10-run defeat in Johannesburg on September 16, 2007, was a tough pill to swallow, MS Dhoni’s team did not lose a game from thereon in the competition and went on to lift the first ICC World T20 trophy beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.

Another similarity between India's defeat in 2007 and their loss in Nagpur on Tuesday is their failure to deal with the left-arm spinner.

While Daniel Vettori ran riot, scalping four wickets, during India's loss in 2007, another left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner – who is tipped to be Vettori’s successor – dismissed four Indian batsmen to guide his team to victory.
