Sydney: Legendary Australia cricketer Steve Waugh’s son Austin Waugh has been included in the Australia’s U-19 World Cup squad. Jason Sangha who made the headlines last month by becoming the youngest Australian to score First-Class century for Cricket Australia XI against England will be leading the side in New Zealand.
James Sutherland’s son Will has also been included in the squad coached by former Australian player Ryan Harris. Former Australian test opener Chris Rogers will assist the former pacer during the tournament.
The last time Australia won the U-19 World Cup in 2010 under captaincy of current Australian all rounder Mitchell Marsh. Other players from that squad Josh Hazlewood, Nic Maddinson, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa are also a part of national set up. The 2010 edition was also held in New Zealand.
Speaking to cricket.com.au, the National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said, “This is a very exciting squad and there is some exceptional talent within this group. These guys have all had success at underage level in Australia over a number of years, and many of them have already had a taste of international U-19 cricket. We’re fortunate that a lot of these players have already played together coming through the underage pathway, which is a great thing. This squad has a serious chance of contending the title.”
Australia is placed in Group B alongside India, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea. The Australian’s will begin their World Cup campaign against India on January 14 at Tauranga’s Bay Oval.
