We knew that if we take it to the last over, we were going to win: Shreyas Iyer

Iyer who remained unbeaten on 27 runs partnered with Jason Roy to help Delhi won the match.

Mumbai : It was yet so near and yet so far for Mumbai Indians on their home turf at Wankhede. Once again the victory eluded them on the final delivery of the match.

Jason Roy, stole victory from the jaws of defeat for the visiting side. For Mumbai, the bowlers yet again failed to defend the total. After posting a huge total of 195 runs on board, the bowlers failed to pick up wickets, which costed the home side their first win of the tournament.

Speaking on team's first victory Delhi Daredevils star batsman Shreyas Iyer praised his team bowlers for fighting back after being hit for runs in the early part of the innings by Mumbai openers.

"Obviously feeling phenomenal at the moment. We were waiting for this win, and especially against Mumbai Indians, it's a great comeback from the team and obviously all of wanted to win this game, so really enjoyed".

“we were expecting (a total) around 220. But our bowlers restricted the score and really bowled well in patches. The comeback was superb by the bowlers,” said Iyer .

Delhi who lost their opening matches to Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals and the loss to Mumbai would have handed them their third straight defeat. The match brought the spectators right on the edge of their seats. With 11 needed to win off the final over, Roy smashed Mustafizur for 10 runs of the first two deliveries.

Mustafizur almost took the tie into super over after bowling three dot ball and with 1 run needed of final delivery, Roy managed to get bat on ball to hit the winning run.

Speaking about the tense finish Iyer said “As a batsman, you would love to close down the chase at the earliest, but they bowled some really good slower balls and the last over, it was tougher for Jason to pick up. But we were optimistic in our thinking and believed in ourselves and decided to take it to the last over. We knew that if we take it to the last over, we were going to win the game. That's what happened".

Mumbai Indian’s Suryakumar Yadav was surprisingly promoted to open the innings. The Mumbai batsman did not disappoint as he scored a half-century but admitted that his side were a few runs short of match-winning total.

“We were 10-15 runs short but still 180+ score is a good score on any ground. It was defendable when we started in fielding. We wanted momentum by taking early wickets but we couldn’t. They batted really well and did not give us a chance in first 10-12 overs,” he said.

Yadav , who batted low down the order, while he played for KKR said that it was team management's decision to send him out to open the innings. He said “Yesterday while we were coming back to the hotel he (captain Rohit Sharma) said we would love if you open the innings as you have played a lot of cricket here and you are most experienced. I said I don’t mind opening the innings because I have played most of my cricket here and know how the new ball behaves.”
