Resignation on the cards? Alastair Cook to meet Andrew Strauss on Friday
London: England Test skipper Alastair Cook is expected to step down from his role as captain and hand over the responsibility to deputy Joe Root.
Cook will meet England’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss on Friday to discuss 4-0 drubbing against India in the sub-continent. According to reports, the opener will inform the former England skipper about his decision to quit Test captaincy. Reports also suggest that no decision is expected until after Team England’s upcoming ODI and T20I series against India.
The England team doesn’t play a Test until July, and that gives management the time to plan out a smooth transition.
Cook, who took over Test captaincy from Strauss in 2012 has lead the side in 59 Tests, winning 24 of them, losing 22 and drawing 13 matches. The opener’s position as captain has come under scrutiny after England’s poor performances in recent past.
In the last one year, under Cook’s leadership, the team drew the home series against Pakistan 2-2, before losing a historic Test match in Bangladesh against the minnows. The final nail in his coffin came on India tour late last year, where the visiting team was decimated by the Virat Kohli-led Indian side.
