One arrested for sending death threat letter to Sourav Ganguly

Ganguly had received the death threat letter via post on January 7 asking him not to attend a programme in West Midnapore district.

Kolkata: One person has been arrested by the police for allegedly sending a death threat letter to former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly recently.

Nirmalya Samanta, the accused, is a resident of Arabinda Nagar in Midnapore of West Midnapore. The accused is a newspaper vendor by profession. The police caught him during a raid, on Friday morning.

Nirmalya is being brought to Kolkata for interrogation since Sourav had earlier lodged a complaint with the Thakurpukur police station. Addressing Sourav's mother Nirupa Ganguly, Nirmalya, in disguise of one Zed Alam from Midnapore, sent the two-page letter written in Bengali. He had used the name of an organisation: All India Anti Corruption Committee in West Midnapore in the letter's envelope to divert attention from him, the police found.

According to preliminary investigations, the accused had personal enmity with Trinamul Congress MLA of Garbeta, Ashish Chakraborty, who is the organiser of an upcoming event of Vidyasagar University on January 19 in Midnapore where Sourav has been invited. While Sourav is the CAB president, Chakraborty is the CAB representative of Midnapore.

The police suspect that Nirmalya assumed if Sourav comes to attend the event, Chakraborty's popularity may increase. The accused had even mentioned Chakraborty's name in his letter but did not specify his profile or designation which initially triggered a confusion for the police.
