Zaheer Khan bats for women cricketers

While the men were paid in crores across all grades, women only took home 50 lakhs as their pay cheque for the top category.

Mumbai: Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has joined the chorus of support to bridge the gender wage gap in cricket. Eyebrows were raised when the BCCI announced the new contract system in which the gulf between the top grade men and men was huge. While the men were paid in crores across all grades, women only took home 50 lakhs as their pay cheque for the top category.

Zaheer, who was part of India’s triumphant World Cup team in 2011, believes that a process needs to be set in order to strike a balance in players’ salaries.

“There is a process in place and accordingly salaries are decided. Earlier, women cricketers weren’t associated with the BCCI but they have come under its fold now. We really hope that the women too get hiked salaries since they have been playing much more frequently. If the need arises, senior players like us will also put in a request to the board to rework the contracts of women cricketers,” Zaheer said.
