Chennai: The city of Chennai has been in mourning with the passing away Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi here on Tuesday after prolonged illness.

The city hospital, where the leader was admitted, said that the 94-year-old leader’s end came at 6.10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The veteran of Dravidian politics was shifted to the hospital on July 28 from his Gopalapuram residence following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.

The scriptwriter-turned-politician dominated the Tamil-language movie industry as a screenwriter beginning in the 1950s, and later the political scene for nearly five decades. He became the Tamil Nadu chief minister in 1969 and held that position five times for a total of 19 years.
