Farmers petition Chennai top cop against IPL
Chennai/Tirunelveli: Joint action committee of Tamil Nadu farmers association made a representation to Chennai commissioner of police A.K. Viswanathan, on Saturday against IPL matches.
“There are advertisements saying an IPL cricket match will be held in Chennai on April 10. Due to unusual circumstances prevailing in the state because of Cauvery protest, the police should not give permission to IPL,” the joint action committee urged in its memorandum.
The committee also alleged that the cricket match would divert the issue.
Meanwhile, Nellai police commissioner decided against screening of the IPL match in giant screen in Tirunelveli under the‘Vivo IPL Fan Park” initiative sponsored by the BCCI.
The city police denied permission for the event on Saturday on the information of the possibility of some youth groups using the live screening of the IPL matches in the city to mobilize agitators against the government on issues like Cauvery and Sterlite plant.
Speaking to DC, Nellai police commissioner Kapil Kumar Saratkar said that the live screening of the IPL event at the exhibition grounds, opposite city municipal corporation office, was not allowed on the apprehension that it might lead to unnecessary law and order issues as more than 1,500 youths were expected to assemble there.
The screening of the live matches between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians on Saturday evening and two other matches the following day between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore and between Kings XI and Delhi Daredevils has been planned using 18-ft by 32-ft giant sized digital screen here.
