KPL auction: Gowtham, Verma hit jackpot

Gowtham was also in the same boat with five of the seven teams interested before Panthers broke the bank to land the all-rounder.

Bengaluru: K Gowtham and Amit Verma were the big winners at the Karnataka Premier League auction held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday as the duo fetched a handsome Rs 7.2 lakh from Belagavi Panthers and Ballari Tuskers respectively.

Entering into the auction early in Pool A, Verma garnered interest from Bengaluru Blasters and Mysuru Warriors before Tuskers blew the competition out of the water.

Gowtham was also in the same boat with five of the seven teams interested before Panthers broke the bank to land the all-rounder.

Mayank Agarwal was the other top buy of the day, becoming the third and final player to touch the seven lakh mark. There was keen interest from across the room for the hard hitting opener, who shone in the previous edition of the tournament, but Hubli Tigers landed their man for a premium price.

R. Samarth (5.9 lakh to Bengaluru), Anirudha Joshi (5.8 lakh to Namma Shivamogga) and Prateek Jain (5.5 lakh to Ballari Tuskers) were some of the other top buys from Pool A. While Kunal Kapoor, who went unsold in the morning session and returned to the auction late in the day, was signed by Ballari for 2.9 lakh.

Rather predictably, due to their commitments with the Indian national sides, KL Rahul (Rs 50,000) and Manish Pandey (1.6 lakh) fetched lower prices although Karun Nair went for four lakh.

Tuskers clinched what could be the bargain of the season when they roped in wicket-keeper batsman CM Gautam for his base price of Rs 50,000.

While the top guns did provide the promised excitement, Pool B had its own share of the same with some heated bids as evidenced by Jonathan’s 5.10 lakh capture by Shivamogga who outbid Bulls to land their man.

All-rounder Stalin Hoover and batsman Dikshanshu Negi also set the pulses rising as the duo eventually went to Belagavi and Bijapur for Rs4.5 lakh and 4.4 lakh respectively. Bijapur also broke the bank to land all-rounder Naveen M.G for 4.2 lakh.

The teams spent a combined total of 2.06 crore for 126 players with Shivamogga spending the least with Rs 28,80,000 while Belagavi used up their entire kitty saving just Rs 5,000 of their 30 lakh purse.
