Virat Kohli becomes 4th Indian to lose all 5 tosses in ODI series
Kingston: It is often said that captains win matches. Team India captain Virat Kohli, however, was unlucky to have lost the toss on all five ODI matches against West Indies, despite winning the series 3-1. Kohli called for tails in all five matches, which ended up with heads, going in Jason Holder’s favour.
With this, the 28-year-old became only the fourth Indian captain to lose the toss in all five matches of a bilateral ODI series.
As a result, Virat Kohli, who has captained India in 30 ODIs so far, has only won 13 tosses, with a toss win percentage of 56.67. MS Dhoni, on the other hand has only won 97 tosses out of the 199 ODIs he has captained.
Virat Kohli, who took over as the permanent captain of India’s ODI team in January this year, has enjoyed his stint so far after beating England 2-1 in the three-match ODI series in January. This was followed with India finishing as runners up in the recently concluded Champions Trophy.
Former captain MS Dhoni was the last to lose the toss on all five matches, which was during India’s tour of England in 2011. Ajinkya Rahane, too, failed to win a single toss against Zimbabwe in a three-match ODI series during their tour to the African country.
Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian to have lost all the tosses in a series, which was during their home series against Australia in the 1984/85 season.
In terms of ODI tournaments, India have lost tosses in six matches in four different tournaments, with the most recent, coming in the 2011/12 Commonwealth Bank Tri series in Australia, which also included Sri Lanka under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
After the lone T20 against West Indies on Sunday, Virat Kohli and co will head to Sri Lanka as they prepare to play three tests, five ODIs and one T20, starting with the longest format on July 26.
