When Krishnamachari Srikkanth dumped a cigar in Ravichandran Ashwin's bowl of sambar

The Indian tweaker opened up about the incident that took place in 2009 in Bengaluru before his international debut.

Mumbai: It has been quite a while since we have seen Ravichandran Ashwin in action for India. The last time he played was back in March, during the Test series against Australia. Since then, he has been out of action and has not been seen playing for the national team.

Ashwin, though, has been doing quite a lot of things off the field, and one of them was being a guest on comedian Vikram Sathaye’s ‘What the Duck’ show.

He spent some time to share an interesting encounter with former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, back in 2009, in Bangalore. It was during his stint with Tamil Nadu in the Ranji trophy, a couple of years before he made his international debut for India.

Srikkanth came into the dressing room, and started an interesting conversation with Ashwin. He asked Ashwin about his performance, to which the tweaker was frank in saying that he was not happy as he had taken just one wicket.

To this, Srikkanth gave a fitting reply: “For me to select you in the Indian cricket team, you need to give me five wickets every single game for me to say that you’re good enough to play in the Indian cricket team. It’s not about knowing that you are good enough, you have to show me that you are good enough,” he said.

Ashwin had no words to say, and he simply replied back with, “Yes sir”.

Post this, Srikkanth did something that baffled one and all.

While Ashwin was holding a bowl of sambar, Srikkanth picked up a cigar, said, “Don’t worry things will change.”

Srikkanth then proceeded to smoke the cigar and dump it in Ashwin’s bowl of sambar. The interesting fact is that Srikkanth did not even realise that there was sambar in it.
