Lord Vishnu cover row: SC quashes criminal proceedings against Dhoni

Earlier, a non-bailable warrant had been against M S Dhoni for posing as Lord Vishnu in magazine.

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Monday quashed criminal proceedings against Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was depicted as Hindu God Lord Vishnu in the cover of a magazine.

The SC court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, declared that the Karnataka high court was failed to follow proper procedure while summoning Dhoni.

A court in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district had issued a non-bailable warrant against Dhoni for the depiction on the cover of a magazine. While the Karnataka High Court refused to quash the case, Dhoni approached the Supreme Court.

"We interfere with the order of the High Court and quash the proceedings including the summoning order against the accused... we have taken note of the complaint and the offence alleged while passing this order" the bench was quoted as saying by PTI.

The apex court had stayed the criminal proceedings in September 2014, and also issued a notice against Jayakumar Hiremath, who had filed the case against Dhoni.

The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has just had an unsuccessful T20 campaign in the United States, where India lost a two-match T20 International series 1-0 to West Indies.
