Organ donation: Hyderabad Sunrisers join awareness campaign
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Sunrisers team has joined hands with a private hospital and an NGO to create awareness about organ donation. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand batsman who plays with Sunrisers, said, “We are humbled to be a part of such a great cause. It’s sad to hear that five lakh people die every year due to lack of organ donors.”
Says a doctor, “Organ donation is a gift of life, not only for the patient who receives it but also for their families. Over 1.6 lakh patients in India are waiting for organs. We are thankful to Hyderabad Sunrisers for coming forward.”
Another doctor said, “Heart and lung transplants can only be done by retrieving organs from brain-dead people. There are more than 50,000 people in this country waiting for heart transplants and 25,000 for lung transplants. The donation rate in our country is a woeful 0.5 per million. We have a long way to go and many more people to save through organ donation.”
The medical profession is elated that the popular Sunrisers team is supporting this noble cause. They say, “Organ donation is the need of the hour and such a well-known cricket team endorsing the organ donation cause will give a boost to the initiative!”
