Sri Lanka vs India: 5 records you didn't know Virat Kohli broke in his 30th ODI ton

Virat Kohli - Making centuries look easy.

Colombo: Team India wrapped the 5-match ODI series in Sri Lanka with another thumping victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. Not only they completed a whitewash, but the Men in Blue also became the first team to do so in a five-match ODI series in Sri Lanka.

While people may argue that the opposition has looked toothless so far in the series, it takes much more effort to produce the goods given the home advantage the opposition face and the risk of fielding newcomers. Credit to Virat Kohli, his men stayed determined and did not let Sri Lanka have a sniff.

While it has been a fruitful tournament for many of the India players, India skipper Virat Kohli once again made his way into the history books by notching his 30th ODI century. Below are 5 interesting records the dashing right-hander broke during his blazing ton vs Sri Lanka:

1 - Virat Kohli has now scored 4 ODI centuries in 2017, which is the most by any batsman in the year.

2 - This was the India captain’s 8th ODI century against Sri Lanka, the most by any batsman against Sri Lanka (on par with Sachin Tendulkar's 8 tons). Only Sachin (9 tons vs Australia) has scored more centuries against any opposition.

3 - Kohli is the only batsman who has faced the least number of innings to reach 30 ODI centuries, equalling Ricky Ponting’s record. Tendulkar took 267 innings while Ponting needed 349 innings to achieve the same feat.

4 – During India's run-chase in the final ODI, Virat Kohli also became the first batsman to score 1,000 runs in ODIs in 2017. The previous record for the fastest Indian batsman to achieve 1000 runs in a calendar year was held by Kohli himself.

5 – Kohli’s 30th ODI ton was his 19th century overseas, equalling with former India skipper Sourav Ganguly for the second highest number of centuries scored by Indians away from home. However, still sitting on top is the Master Blaster with 29 ODI tons.

Arguably, the 28-year-old might have never faced the top bowlers such as Shane Warne, Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath and others like Sachin did to break records. But deemed as the heir to Tendulkar, Kohli has shouldered the responsibility with aplomb, shattering records at pace with his consistency and unending hunger .
