Post Anil Kumble exit, Phil Simmons applies to coach Virat Kohli-led India
Mumbai: The race for the Team India coach job has heated up once again, with a new entrant coming into the fray.
According to the Mumbai Mirror, Phil Simmons, former coach of his home country West Indies has applied for the post of India’s coach, as the list of contenders just keeps on growing.
India’s former coach Anil Kumble had resigned from the post last month due to a rift with captain Virat Kohli, and the post has been vacant since then.
During his time as West Indies coach, Phil Simmons enjoyed a successful run at the World T20 in India last year, as West Indies triumphed over England in a thrilling World T20 final in Kolkata.
Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had confirmed the extension of the deadline to apply for the position.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the timeline for submission of applications for the post of ‘Head Coach’ for India men’s cricket team.
The candidates who have applied earlier need not re-apply and will be included in the final list of applicants. The last date for submission of applications is hence extended to the 9th of July, 2017,” a statement released by the BCCI had quoted.
The other contenders for the post include Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus and Ravi Shastri.
The interview for the coach job will be held in Mumbai on July 10.
