Under-fire umpire moved to TV

The 46-year-old was scheduled to have been one of the field umpires but was withdrawn from that role.

Bengaluru: Umpire C Shamshuddin, who has been in the eye of storm following the second T20 game at Nagpur, did not officiate in the third T20 between India and England, here on Wednesday. Nitin Menon replaced Shamshuddin on field while the latter took up the role of the TV umpire.

The 46-year-old was scheduled to have been one of the field umpires but was withdrawn from that role. The umpire came under scrutiny after a couple of poor decisions in the previous match, which included the decision to not judge Virat Kohli lbw while ruling Joe Root leg before at a crucial juncture. Both these were proved wrong in television replays.

Root’s dismissal, which arguably cost England the match, has since led to England captain Eoin Morgan claiming that the team management will take it up with the match referee. There were also calls for the use of DRS to remove such errors.
