How MS Dhoni will help Virat Kohli in South Africa, reveals Virender Sehwag

Virat Kohli's men will look to end South Africa's 17-match winning streak in ODIs in their backyard.

New Delhi: Virat Kohli and co had their share of troubles but the young Indian team managed to hold their shape and win the third Test on a difficult Wanderers pitch in Johannesburg to end the Test series against South Africa on a high.

While South Africa won the Test series, India are a force to reckon with in the limited-overs cricket and they will look to end Proteas’ 17-match winning streak in ODIs in their backyard.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag said that the win in the final Test will boost the morale of the Indian team during ODI series, which will see the likes of MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav playing a crucial role.

“The win in the last Test match at Johannesburg has definitely lifted the morale of the team,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by India TV.

“After losing the first two Tests, people were thinking that India might lose it 3-0 but Virat Kohli and his team made a brilliant comeback. The bowlers made a big contribution to the win. There are only a handful of instances where the bowlers have successfully defended a small total. You need to give credit to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami,” added Sehwag.

Sehwag also asserted that Dhoni’s arrival will help Kohli. India’s World Cup-winning skipper has been a great asset to Kohli-led Indian side not just as a wicketkeeper-batsman but also as someone to whom Kohli turns to in terms of field settings and on-field strategies. Sehwag felt that Dhoni will be of a great help as he can point out flaws and assist Kohli.

“In ODI cricket, Kohli also has MS Dhoni, who is always there to point out his flaws unlike in Test cricket. You will see Dhoni giving suggestions to Kohli, you will see him set the field... this is definitely a benefit,” Sehwag said.

"I think, Virat Kohli needs some players who can point out his mistakes on the field. Every team has four-five players, who advise the skipper and help him avoid mistakes on-field. I don't see that in the current Indian squad," he added.
