Brazil To Face India in Historic Football Friendly in Kolkata on October 3

Kolkata: Almost five decades after Pele ignited Kolkata's romance with Brazilian football, the iconic yellow jersey is set to return to the City of Joy, with the record five-time World Cup champions Brazil scheduled to face India in a landmark international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium on October 3.

The fixture, confirmed by both the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and their Brazilian counterparts (CBF) on Thursday, is poised to become the biggest match in Indian football history, bringing the Selecao to Indian soil for the first time.

"A date for the history books. India vs Brazil FIFA International Friendly at Salt Lake Stadium on October 3," the AIFF posted on its official X handle.

The match will see India face their highest-ranked opponents since the FIFA World Ranking system was introduced in 1992, with Brazil currently occupying the fifth spot, the AIFF stated in a release.

Indian football fans may once again get the opportunity to watch star-studded squad led by captain Marquinhos and featuring the likes of Casemiro, Matheus Cunha, Gabriel Magalhaes and Endrick.

Brazil are scheduled to arrive in India after playing two friendlies against Australia in Queensland on September 25 and 29.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) had already announced those fixtures.

The CBF also confirmed the landmark fixture on its official X handle, describing it as an "unprecedented chaper" for the Brazilian national team.

"From Australia to India. The Brazilian National Team's schedule continues. After the friendlies in Australia, our next destination will be India, where we will write an unprecedented chapter in our history," the CBF posted.

The Brazilian federation noted that the October 3 fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium would mark the Selecao's first-ever match on Indian soil and highlighted India's unique connection with Brazilian football.

"It will be a special meeting with a country that is home to the largest international audience of the Brazilian National Team and that, for generations, has closely followed the history of Brazilian football with enormous affection and passion. We look forward to living this moment alongside millions of Indian fans. See you in Kolkata," the post read.

The friendly comes months after Brazil's FIFA World Cup campaign, where the Selecao exited in the Round of 16.

Yet their popularity remained unmatched in India, particularly in Kolkata, where neighbourhoods once again turned yellow and green with posters, murals and fan gatherings celebrating the Brazilian team.

Kolkata's emergence as the preferred venue is understood to have been driven largely by that overwhelming support, underlining the city's enduring bond with Brazilian football.

While the love affair started with Pele's visit, the 1982 and 1986 World Cup, whose matches were aired live on Doordarshan increased it manifold as Kolkata's soccer crazy public were mesmerised by likes of Zico, Socrates, Junior, Falcao, Joshimar to name a few.

AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan described the match as a landmark moment for Indian football.

"To welcome a team of Brazil's stature to our country is an extraordinary moment and one that will undoubtedly become a landmark chapter in the history of Indian football," he said.

National Teams Director Subrata Paul said the fixture would offer India's players an invaluable learning experience.

"For our national team players, this is far more than just another match. It is a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations the game has ever known. Experiences like these challenge players to grow, inspire them to dream bigger, and leave memories that stay with them throughout their careers," he said.

India's international calendar is also gathering momentum as the Blue Tigers are slated to tour New Zealand in November for a historic two-match friendly series, taking on the All Whites in Auckland on November 12 before the second match in Christchurch on November 15.

India are also slated to compete at the ASEAN Cup from September 21-October 6.

India are drawn along side Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The proposed fixture comes less than a year after the chaotic organisation of Lionel Messi's visit to the Salt Lake Stadium which was ransacked bearing the brunt of fans fury after politicians 'hijacked' the event.

The iconic Salt Lake Stadium has previously hosted some of world football's biggest names.

In 2011, Messi-led Argentina defeated Venezuela 1-0 in a FIFA international friendly, with the match marking Messi's first as Argentina captain outside his home country.

Brazil's visit revives Kolkata's rich association with the South American giants nearly five decades after Pele stirred the emotions of Indian football fans.

On September 24, 1977, Pele's New York Cosmos played Mohun Bagan in a historic exhibition match at Eden Gardens that ended 2-2, a contest that remains one of the defining moments in Indian football history and cemented Kolkata's love affair with Brazilian football.

Over the decades, the city has continued to welcome some of the sport's greatest names.

Diego Maradona visited Kolkata in 2008 and 2009, receiving a hero's welcome.

Messi played at the Salt Lake Stadium in 2011 before returning for a fan tour in December 2025.

Legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin visited the city during international tours in 1955 and 1973, while Germany great Oliver Kahn played his farewell match for Bayern Munich against Mohun Bagan at the Salt Lake Stadium in 2008.

Cameroon legend Roger Milla also featured for Diamond Club in Mohun Bagan's centenary celebration tournament besides the city also hosting a many other greats of International football. German top tier club Bochum and Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven also toured India.
