Atmanirbhar on Four Legs: Indigenous Breeds Powering India’s Defence

At this year’s Republic Day parade, the Indian Army will showcase Indian-breed Army dogs such as the Mudhol Hound, Kombai, Rajapalayam, Rampur Hound and Chippiparai—each selected for traits honed over centuries

As India pushes towards self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, the focus is not limited to weapons and technology alone. Increasingly, it extends to living assets—indigenous animal breeds now playing specialised roles in national defence.

At this year’s Republic Day parade, the Indian Army will showcase Indian-breed Army dogs such as the Mudhol Hound, Kombai, Rajapalayam, Rampur Hound and Chippiparai—each selected for traits honed over centuries.

These native breeds are naturally adapted to Indian terrain and climate, possessing high stamina, agility and disease resistance. When trained for military roles like tracking, guarding and explosive detection, they reduce dependence on imported breeds and strengthen operational sustainability.

The presence of these dogs at Kartavya Path reflects a broader shift—one that recognises the strategic value of indigenous knowledge systems and biological resilience.

In celebrating these animals on Republic Day, India also celebrates an idea: that self-reliance can be rooted in tradition, strengthened by science and expressed through service.
