Unemployment among Telangana youth declines

Hyderabad: Unemployment among Indian youth aged 15 to 29 has shown a slight decline in recent months. The National Labour Force Survey's quarterly report for July-September 2024 indicates a decrease in the unemployment rate from 22.9% to 18.1%. This positive trend can be attributed to increased job opportunities, particularly in the private sector.

However, when considering all age groups, the national unemployment rate stands at 6.8%. Regional disparities persist, with Kerala topping the list at 10.1% unemployment, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 7.3%. Delhi boasts the lowest unemployment rate at 2.6%, while Karnataka's rate is 4%. Among the 22 states, Telangana ranks 10th with a 6.4% unemployment rate.

While the recent decline in youth unemployment is encouraging, sustained efforts are needed to address the broader issue of unemployment across all age groups and regions.

Under the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) party's governance, job creation in Telangana became a significant point of contention, as the state saw little progress in this area over the decade they were in power. The high unemployment rate among the youth played a pivotal role in the party's electoral setback. The Labour Force Survey for 2022-23 indicated that Telangana had an alarming youth unemployment rate of 15.1 per cent for those aged 15 to 29, which not only exceeded the national average of 10 per cent but also positioned it among the highest in India.
