Zoo Steps Up Safety Ahead of Bakrid

Zoo authorities urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to be more involved this year, citing inadequate support last time. “We’re focusing more carefully, both inside and outside the zoo."

Hyderabad: With Bakrid approaching on June 7, Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad has begun early safety measures to protect its animals. Deep cleaning and enclosure checks started well in advance, especially for deer and other small animals housed in open enclosures with footpaths.

Zoo authorities urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to be more involved this year, citing inadequate support last time. “We’re focusing more carefully, both inside and outside the zoo,” a senior official said.

Meat consumption surges during Bakrid, with livestock arriving from states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Officials warned that diseased or aged animals may enter the supply chain, posing infection risks. Visitors may also carry germs from markets, so cleaning is intensified near food paths. Zookeepers are being trained to spot early illness signs. Foot-and-mouth disease remains a key concern, and regular veterinary consultations are held to update medicines and vaccines for rapid response.
