Hyderabad: In a proactive move to ensure public safety ahead of New Year celebrations, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, personally supervised field-level drunk driving inspections at the TG Study Circle in Banjara Hills late on Wednesday night.
The commissioner issued a stern warning that a zero-tolerance policy would be enforced and made it clear that there would be no leniency for those driving beyond the permissible alcohol limit.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Sajjanar disclosed that 120 strategic locations have been identified across seven zones in the twin cities, where a Special Enforcement Drive will be carried out till the night of December 31 with intensive checks.
“Violators will face immediate seizure of their vehicles, a fine of ₹10,000, and a possible prison sentence of up to six months,” the commissioner clarified. He further stated that depending on the severity of the offence, the police would recommend permanent cancellation of driving licences to the Transport Department.
During the inspections, Sajjanar reviewed the performance of field officers, assessed enforcement and prosecution procedures, and issued key instructions to streamline the process. He also interacted directly with individuals caught driving under the influence, educating them about the serious risks and potential fatalities associated with drunk driving.
Emphasising that such negligence endangers not only the driver but also innocent commuters, the commissioner said robust measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents during the festive period.
