World No Tobacco Day: TSCSI Raises Alarm over Youth Nicotine Addiction

More than eight million lives are lost every year due to tobacco-related diseases and millions of adolescents across the world are already trapped in nicotine addiction: TSCSI

Hyderabad: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2026, observed globally on May 31 under the leadership of World Health Organization, Cardiological Society of Telangana (TSCSI) joined hands to raise awareness against the growing threat of tobacco and nicotine addiction among youth.

Speaking on the Occasion Dr. Mukesh Rao, president of TSCSI, said that this year’s theme is “Unmasking the appeal – Countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,” exposes how tobacco and nicotine companies are using colorful packaging, sweet flavors, influencer culture, and social media marketing to make harmful products.

The companies are making them appear attractive, modern, and harmless to children and young people, the alarming rise in the use of flavored vapes, e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and other addictive products among adolescents is not just a health issue — it is a global public health emergency.

TSCSI added that more than eight million lives are lost every year due to tobacco-related diseases. Millions of adolescents across the world are already trapped in nicotine addiction.

Smoking and tobacco use continue to cause lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illness, reduced immunity, and serious mental and physical health problems. The society would strongly support the efforts to protect children and youth from nicotine addiction, strengthen tobacco control laws and awareness campaigns, enforce no-smoking zones, ban promotion of tobacco and nicotine products targeting minors and encourage counselling and support services for quitting tobacco.

“We urge every citizen, especially the youth, to reject tobacco and choose health, strength, and life,” he added.
