Hyderabad: Gold ornaments studded with diamonds kept in a handbag were stolen by identified persons in Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Duronto express on Sunday.
A retired employee K Mahender and his wife Padmaja were travelling in A4 AC compartment to reach Hyderabad from Thane in Maharashtra. Padmaja kept the handbag below her head and slept on Saturday night. When she woke up around 4.30 am at Sholapur, she found the empty bag near her legs.
A gold ring, ear studs with diamonds and other belongings and Rs.15,000 in cash, all worth more than Rs.8 lakh was missing in the bag, Secunderabad Railway Sub-Inspector Majeed said.
He said Padmaja then alerted Mahender, who lodged a complaint with the railway police after the train reached Secunderabad station. Based on a complaint, the police booked a case and are verifying the footage of surveillance cameras installed at the railway stations.
The Secunderabad railway police are also seeking the assistance of their counterparts in Maharashtra to zero in on the persons, who had stolen the gold ornaments, with the help of surveillance cameras. The investigators are also collecting details of those who travelled in the compartment along with the couple to detect the case.
