Woman Kills Sons, Attempts Suicide in Bachupally
Rathnamma, 30, drowned her children in a sump; rescued by neighbours at midnight

Hyderabad: A 30-year-old woman allegedly killed her two sons, aged eight and three, by drowning before attempting suicide in Bachupally around 12.30 am on Tuesday. According to inspector C. Satish Kumar, the woman, Rathnamma, a native of Sangareddy, had moved to the city from Kamareddy with her husband, Laxman, who works at a brick kiln.
Police said Laxman left for work at about 9 pm. Alone at home, Rathnamma went to a five-foot water sump near her house around midnight, pushed her two sons into it, and then jumped into it. A neighbour, who had stepped out after waking up, heard a splash and rushed to the sump. He alerted other locals, who managed to rescue Rathnamma and retrieve the children’s bodies. They informed the police, who shifted the boys to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Rathnamma was admitted to a private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is stable, but she requires psychological support, police said. Laxman lodged a complaint, following which a case was registered under Section 103 of the BNS. In his complaint, Laxman mentioned that they had two more sons, aged five and eight, living with their grandparents in Kamareddy.
“Rathnamma had been pressing her husband to get her sterilised, but the procedure was delayed due to financial problems. She was also disturbed by the recent death of her parents. These appear to be the reasons behind her extreme step,” the Inspector said. Police added that further action will be decided after the children’s final rites. Investigation is underway.
