Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao directs officials to improve hostel facilities and ensure smooth transfer of funds to students in government welfare hostels for 2025-26.

Hyderabad: The state government has decided to directly transfer cosmetic charges into the bank accounts of students in government welfare hostels for 2025-26 from June. These hostels cater to students from Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities communities and government gurukul (residential) institutions.

Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao issued instructions on Tuesday to ensure a smooth transfer of these funds and also to encourage students to open bank accounts before the commencement of the academic year. Ramakrishna Rao was speaking at a meeting with officials from various welfare departments and gurukul institutions to review the state of welfare hostels and discuss measures to improve facilities and services.

Ramakrishna Rao informed officials that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had been closely monitoring the living conditions and food quality in these welfare hostels, placing a special focus on their improvement. He instructed officials to issue debit cards to students.

The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of food quality and ensuring that incidents of food poisoning were prevented. He highlighted the need for improved infrastructure within the hostels. Officials were directed to submit proposals for the procurement of essential supplies such as food items, textbooks, uniforms, bedsheets, carpets and school bags in advance.
