We Are Planning a Semi-residential System in Government Schools: Revanth
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday promised to convert existing government schools in Telangana into 'semi-residential schools'. He said that the government wants to provide evening snacks to students in government schools in addition to breakfast and midday meals that are being served already.
While the mid-day meals scheme was introduced almost two decades ago, the breakfast scheme was launched last October.
Chief Minister Revanth was speaking at an event to felicitate SSC exam toppers those who scored a perfect 10 from government schools, under the auspices of Vande Mataram Foundation.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi, N. Chandrababu Naidu and I are all products of government schools and we have reached this position,” he said.
“It is a matter of pride that government school students are excelling in exams and competing with their peers from private schools. This has enhanced our prestige,” he said, congratulating the students for their achievement.
Emphasising on the quality of education in government schools, Reddy said, “I am here not just because of my parents’ hard work but also because of my school teachers.”
Admitting that government schools suffer from several problems, he said that immediately after his government came to power, it appointed Burra Venkatesham as the education department secretary and directed him to solve the problems in government schools, adding that investment in education is not an investment as it would benefit the society.
Speaking of the closure of single-teacher schools during the BRS regime, he said that his government has decided not to close single-teacher schools, adding that his government intends to make education accessible to each and every village.
In this regard, he said, “We have sanctioned Rs 2,000 crore to rebuild all government school buildings that are in a dilapidated condition. The government is organising the proto-professor Jayashankar Badibata programme to enroll students in schools. We handed over the management of these schools to women's associations and have directed officials to release funds through the green channel.”
Stating that a study has found that residential schooling weakens parent-child relationships, the chief minister said that the government is considering the implementation of a semi-residential system in government schools.
He said “Soon we are going to set up education and agriculture commissions and provide flexibility to solve problems on a continuous note. Our government has no language bars. We are ready to accept any suggestions. We have instructed the authorities to pay special attention to the admissions of students who have scored 10/10.”
Later, the Chief Minister felicitated all toppers and gave them their certificates.
