WATER Supply From Godavari To Basar IIIT Hit

Problems aggravate with motors malfunctioning at Intake well: Reports

ADILABAD: Water problems for Basar IIIT have aggravated, with only one out of three pumping motors that supply water from the Intake well-functioning under Mission Bhagiratha for the last few days.

There has been a long delay in repairing the two defunct motors. In view of this, the Basar IIIT has extended its Dasara holidays up to November 17.

This has affected the Basar IIIT’s efforts to fill the existing 800ml-capacity reservoir, which is meant to mitigate the drinking water problems in an emergency.

Some 9000 students do various courses on the campus apart from the presence and stay of 1,000 staff in the Basar IIIT campus.

Mission Bhagiratha officials proposed setting up new motors for pumping water at the intake well.

The IIIT says the drinking water problems will be severe for the students in March and April if the same situation continues.

The water table is depleting in the Godavari. There are no inflows into the Godavari from Maharashtra with the closure of Babli gates. There is no water supply from the SRSP. Only 10 per cent of capacity is filled in the reservoir on the Basar campus.

Basar IIIT vice-chancellor, Prof A Govardhan, said some 20-22 lakh litres of water is required every day for the drinking water and other purposes on the campus, but only 10 lakh litres of water is being pumped and supplied to it.

He said they have extended Dasara holidays for the students in view of the insufficient water supply to the campus, and that they can’t provide muddy water to the students.

Prof Govardhan said the water level has drastically come down in Godavari.

Basar IIIT DE Rajeshwar said each student needs 136 litres of water per day; thus, the campus requires 15 lakh litres of water for the students, but there are no inflows into Godavari from the upstream. “We are using only the backwaters of SRSP right now. The SRSP water level is coming down day by day.”

He said that every day they can pump 2mld of water using two motors from the intake well to fill the reservoir on the campus. Three new motors are required, each with 65 HP capacity. Mission Bhagiratha officials have sent proposal on this to the district officials.
