According to HMWS&SB officials, nearly 24,000 rainwater harvesting pits have been constructed across Hyderabad so far this year. The Board has set a target of creating 30,000 such pits citywide.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) managing director Ashok Reddy on Thursday inaugurated newly constructed rainwater harvesting pits at KBHB Park in Kukatpally and called upon citizens to actively participate in water conservation efforts.
Addressing a water conservation awareness programme, Ashok Reddy said rainwater harvesting was crucial for improving groundwater levels and meeting the city's growing water requirements. He interacted with residents and representatives of colony welfare associations on the importance of groundwater recharge and sustainable water management.
The MD lauded residents of Kukatpally Housing Board Colony for voluntarily constructing the harvesting pits and said community participation was essential for the success of water conservation initiatives.
As part of the water board's groundwater recharge programme, Ashok Reddy also inaugurated 40 defunct borewells that have been converted into injection borewells in the Kukatpally Circle. The initiative aims to channel rainwater into underground aquifers and enhance groundwater availability.
According to HMWS&SB officials, nearly 24,000 rainwater harvesting pits have been constructed across Hyderabad so far this year. The Board has set a target of creating 30,000 such pits citywide.
The water board has also identified 700 unused borewells for conversion into injection borewells. Of these, 350 have already been converted, while work on the remaining borewells is expected to be completed in the coming months.
