Warangal Eyeing To Be TG’s Next Major City After Hyderabad
Highway projects, Mamnoor airport, and a super-speciality hospital are expected to boost economic activity in the region: Reports

WARANGAL: Warangal is at a crucial stage of development, with major infrastructure projects expected to strengthen its position as a key urban, educational, medical, and commercial centre in north Telangana. Improved highway connectivity, the proposed Mamnoor airport and a 2,200-bed super-speciality hospital would transform the region’s landscape.
The four-laning of National Highway 563 between Warangal and Karimnagar is nearing completion. The 68.015-km project, extending from Hanumakonda towards Karimnagar, has been taken up at an estimated cost of ₹1,641 crore. A trial run has reportedly been conducted ahead of its opening to regular traffic.
The journey between the two cities currently takes up to one-and-a-half hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once the highway becomes fully operational, travel time is expected to fall to around 45 minutes. The project includes bypasses, underpasses, major and minor bridges, solar-powered lighting, CCTV cameras, and modern traffic management systems.
Bypasses at Huzurabad, Shankarapatnam, and Manakondur are expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
The improved route would also benefit farmers, traders, and businesses by facilitating faster movement of agricultural produce and goods, while strengthening connectivity across north Telangana
Greenfield highway towards Khammam
Preparations are on for a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway towards Khammam as part of National Highway 163G. The Detailed Project Report process and land acquisition-related activities are underway, with notifications issued for various sections.
The proposed highway is expected to ease pressure on existing roads and improve connectivity between Warangal and Khammam, potentially encouraging commercial and industrial activity along the corridor. However, the implementation schedule and completion date remain to be confirmed.
Proposals to improve highway connectivity between Mahabubabad and Bhadrachalam could further strengthen transport links to tribal areas, subject to official approvals and confirmation of the project’s status.
Airport and healthcare expansion
The proposed development of Mamnoor airport is another significant project for Warangal. Improved air connectivity would benefit business travellers, entrepreneurs, and tourists, reducing dependence on Hyderabad for air travel. The project’s current status and commencement date for flight operations will depend on official updates.
Healthcare infrastructure is expected to receive a major boost with a proposed 24-storey super-speciality hospital being developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,100 crore. With a planned capacity of 2,200 beds, the facility is expected to serve patients from the erstwhile Warangal district and neighbouring regions, including Khammam and Karimnagar.
Once operational, the hospital could expand access to specialised treatment and reduce the need for patients to travel to Hyderabad for advanced medical care. Its completion and full-scale operational dates are yet to be officially confirmed.
The combined development of highways, an airport, and advanced healthcare facilities could attract investment, expand commercial activity, and create employment opportunities for local youth.
However, these benefits will depend on timely completion, quality maintenance, and effective integration with public transport and supporting infrastructure.
