Vehicle Life Tax Will Hit Middle Classes: Harish

A vehicle costing Rs 1.10 lakh will now attract life tax of Rs 16,500 instead of Rs 13,200.

Hyderabad: The BRS on Thursday condemned the government decision to increase the life tax on new vehicles in Telangana calling it “a decision that will break the backs of the poor and middle classes in the state.”

Senior party leader and former finance minister T. Harish Rao said, “The latest decision of the Congress government is nothing but sucking up the blood of the people. This will result in at least an additional burden of Rs 1,000 crore on the people."

He said, “even an ordinary scooter or a motorcycle which are bought mostly by common people and small business persons, costs more than Rs 1 lakh. Raising the life tax of two-wheelers costing more than Rs 1 lakh to 15% from the existing 12% is a body blow to such people.”

Harish Rao said, “Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is making finance and deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s comments that the Congress has vast experience in ‘income generation’ come true.”

A vehicle costing Rs 1.10 lakh will now attract life tax of Rs 16,500 instead of Rs 13,200. And for those who manage to buy a car after going through a lot of trouble taking loans and the like, the life tax increase means around Rs 20,000 more on the vehicle that is purchased, he said.

“Revanth Reddy is out to break the backs of the people and even commercial vehicles have not been spared. All the additional cost on these vehicles will translate into higher cost of goods. Rising taxes to generate funds for rural roads is shameful,” Harish Rao said.
