VDCs Encouraging Illegal Activities In Villages

Adilabad SP Akhil Mahajan has said the VDCs should not support the illegal activities, but instead extend cooperation to maintain law and order and work for the welfare of the people.

Adilabad: Members of Village Development Committees are found involved in illegal activities like giving unofficial permissions for illegal sand mining and transportation -- and for running of belt shops and toddy shops without licence in Adilabad district.

The police have registered cases against 47 members of VDCs and arrested some of them in 13 cases till now this year in the Adilabad subdivision alone, demonstrating the seriousness of the situation.

As per complaints, some VDCs are socially boycotting lower-level communities such as washermen, fishermen, dalits, toddy tappers etc on petty issues in Adilabad and Nirmal districts.

Sometimes VCDs are accused of taking extreme decisions to show their upper caste hegemony. This also includes some upper OBC communities in the village caste structure.

It is evident that VDCs are indirectly encouraging liquor consumption by giving unofficial permission for running belt shops in their villages. They are also giving permission for illegal sand mining from their streams and rivulets without bothering about a decline in water recharge scenario or in the storage in the water bodies due to rampant illegal sand mining. This is causing drinking water problems for livestock and villagers.

Adilabad SP Akhil Mahajan has said the VDCs should not support the illegal activities, but instead extend cooperation to maintain law and order and work for the welfare of the people. He said the VDCs should bring problems, if any, in their villages to the notice of the police and resolve them within the ambit of law.

Mahajan said they would take stern action against the VDCs and their members if they support the law violators and give permission for illegal activities or are directly or indirectly involved in the illegal activities.
