Uttam Asks Jal Shakti Minister To Ensure Srisailam Dam Safety

"Urgent action is solicited as this is essential not only to ensure the structural safety and continued operation of this critical infrastructure but also to safeguard hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supplies and the well-being”: Uttam Kumar Reddy

HYDERABAD: Irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has urged Union jal shakti Minister C.R. Patil to pay “urgent attention” to the safety of Srisailam dam as the “well-being of hundreds of thousands of people” in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh rest on the dam staying safe.

In a letter to Patil, Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) chairman had recently written to the Andhra Pradesh government on its “non-compliance” on the “recommendations made by various expert groups/panels/committees who visited the dam site in the last six to seven years.” Despite this, the AP government, Uttam Kumar Reddy said, had not taken up the necessary repairs to the dam’s plunge pool, and recalled how the Telangana government had repeatedly raised concerns over the safety of the dam’s structure.

Uttam Kumar Reddy told Patil that “urgent action is solicited as this is essential not only to ensure the structural safety and continued operation of this critical infrastructure but also to safeguard hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supplies and the well-being” of the people of the two states.
