UoH researchers secure patent for rocket propellant

HYDERABAD: A new compound developed by researchers at the University of Hyderabad’s (UoH) DRDO centre could provide another option for solid rocket propulsion after the team secured an Indian patent for it.
The Indian Patent Office granted Patent No. 599900 to the DRDO Chairman and the Advanced Centre for Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM) at UoH, now known as the Defence Innovation and Advanced Technology Centre (DIA-CoE), the university said on Wednesday. The patent was granted on August 20.
The invention, BAM-H24, is a boron-, hydrogen- and nitrogen-rich compound developed for use in solid rocket propellants. According to UoH, the compound has high chemical and thermal stability and low sensitivity to impact and friction — properties critical for propulsion materials as they improve stability during handling and use.
The patent covers BAM-H24 as a solid rocket fuel, propellant additive and burn-rate accelerator. The university said the material also has potential applications in missile systems and launch vehicles.
The research was carried out by Dr Muddamarri Hanumantha Rao and Prof Muralidharan Krishnamurthi of ACRHEM and the School of Chemistry, UoH. Their work covers the synthesis, structure and energetic properties of the compound. The patent application was filed on December 21, 2022.
UoH added that BAM-H24 is non-hygroscopic, meaning it does not readily absorb moisture, and has properties expected to support high-energy solid propulsion.
