UNESCO Ambassador Reviews Conservation Works at Ramappa Temple

Ambassador Sharma, who travelled from Paris, reviewed the post-inscription conservation measures during his visit

Warangal: Ambassador V. Vishal Sharma, India’s permanent representative to UNESCO, visited the Rudreshwara Swamy Temple (Ramappa), a World Heritage Site, at Palampet in Venkatapur mandal of Mulugu district on Sunday to review ongoing conservation and preservation works.

The visit was aimed at assessing the efforts being undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India and the state government to conserve the ancient temple, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.

Ambassador Sharma, who travelled from Paris, reviewed the post-inscription conservation measures during his visit. He had chaired the 46th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, becoming the first Indian official to hold the post, during whose tenure Ramappa Temple received World Heritage status.

The visit was organised while the ambassador was in Hyderabad to attend a programme hosted by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services. His Mulugu tour focused on evaluating conservation initiatives following the temple’s inclusion on the UNESCO list.

Ambassador Sharma had recently chaired the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, which resulted in the inscription of the festival of Diwali on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

He was accompanied during the inspection by officials including Dr H.R. Desai, Krishna Chaitanya, Dr Rohini Panda Ambedkar from the ASI, and Nagoji Rao, a senior executive from INCOIS, among others.
