Tummala Slams Oppn Fear Mongering On Urea Supplies

The distribution of urea was proceeding smoothly through nearly 12,000 retail outlets, Nageswara Rao said in a statement, and reassured farmers that the fertiliser was being allotted and supplied to farmers based on their needs.

HYDERABAD: Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Thursday slammed Opposition parties for creating unnecessary anxiety among farmers on supply of urea fertiliser to farmers. He said that Opposition parties were magnifying “small technical issues” encountered with the fertilser app encountered at a few places and portraying the entire system as a failure.

The distribution of urea was proceeding smoothly through nearly 12,000 retail outlets, Nageswara Rao said in a statement, and reassured farmers that the fertiliser was being allotted and supplied to farmers based on their needs. The fertiliser app introduced by the state government, was being replicated by the Centre government which was running it on a pilot basis in some districts, he said.

While crops have been planted in only around 14.78 lakh acres so far this year due to inadequate rainfall, farmers, by June 24, had purchased 1,91,000 tonnes of urea. This was more than 180,000 tonnes purchased by the end of June last year.

He said the more than 85 per cent of Telangana farmers falling into the small and marginal category were being supplied their entire urea requirement at a single time. For large farmers, urea is being provided in two or three instalments based on the monthly quota allocated to the state by the Centre. “This is not discrimination. It is a responsible approach to distributing limited resources equally among all,” Nageswara Rao said.
