TGSPDCL Turns Tree Branches Into Biochar In Green Initiative
The pilot project comes amid growing concerns over the safe disposal of the biomass left behind after pruning of branches: Reports
HYDERABAD: The southern discom said it had begun using a wood chipper machine and a biochar kiln to make biochar of tree branches trimmed from near power lines. The initiative is intended to streamline branch disposal while promoting environmentally friendly waste management. TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil, inspected the functioning of the equipment at a pilot project at Mallapur on Friday.
The pilot project comes amid growing concerns over the safe disposal of the biomass left behind after pruning of branches. During the inspection, Patil explained the operation and benefits of the wood chipper and the biochar-making process to Uppal zonal commissioner Radhika Gupta. He suggested that the technology could also be adopted within municipal limits to improve the management of tree branches and strengthen sanitation operations.
Gupta said steps would be taken to explore the use of similar technology in municipal areas. The inspection was attended by Medchal-Malkajgiri chief engineer Ramesh, Habsiguda superintending engineer and officials and staff of the electricity department.
