TGSPDCL Ramps Up Infra to Meet Summer Demand

As against the peak of 4,352 MW on May 6, 2024, dsicom is expecting that demand will surpass 5,000 MW

HYDERABAD: The southern discom is expecting a surge in power demand during peak summer days in the GHMC limits. As against the peak of 4,352 MW on May 6, 2024, discom is expecting that demand will surpass 5,000 MW.

The demand growth in the capital has exceeded 30 per cent in some areas. The Cybercity circle, comprising Gachibowli, Ibrahimbagh and Kondapur divisions, recorded a 31.75 per cent rise in demand last year. The Banjara Hills circle saw a 22.62 per cent increase, the Medchal, Kukatpally and Jeedimetla divisions in the Medchal circle registered a 20.24 per cent rise.

TGSPDCL CMD Musharraf Ali Faruqui underscored the need for strict line clearance protocols and coordination between Transco and discom engineers to ensure safety during maintenance operations. He said preventive upkeep and timely repairs are prioritised to reduce disruption during peak load periods. Advanced monitoring tools are tracking feeder loads and performance in real-time, allowing faster response to outages and better demand management.

The TGSPDCL has strengthened its infrastructure by upgrading the distribution network and installing additional power transformers and distribution transformers, following the directives from Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka.

New feeders have been commissioned at the 33/11 kV and LT levels. Over 5,000 feeders are now monitored through the Feeder Outage Management System for improved supply quality and quicker response. In the Metro Zone — covering Hyderabad central and south regions, Hills and Secunderabad — TGSPDCL has added 105 new 11 kV feeders, 12 new 33 kV feeders, one sub-station, 30 additional power transformers in existing substations and 506 new distribution transformers. Across the GHMC area, 602 new 11 kV feeders, 70 new 33 kV feeders, 19 sub-stations, 173 power transformers and 2,533 distribution transformers have been installed or upgraded.

Despite challenges like gales, winds and heavy rains, TGSPDCL has ensured quick restoration. During one such spell, 350 feeders were disrupted but restored promptly by senior staff working through critical hours.

Faruqui expressed confidence that with real-time monitoring, infrastructure ramp-up and rapid restoration capabilities, TGSPDCL will deliver quality, uninterrupted power supply during Hyderabad’s high-demand summer months.
