TGHRC Takes Note Of Lack Of Amenities In 5 Govt. Hospitals In Hyderabad

Lack of amenities may violate the right to life and dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution: TGHRC

Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken suo-motu cognizance of two media reports – lack of amenities at five government hospitals in the city and abandoning an 80-year-old woman in the forest in Jagtial - indicating possible human rights violations.

Based on a report in an vernacular news daily, the Commission noted severe hardships faced by patients due to lack of fans, coolers, and drinking water in Osmania General Hospital at Afzalgunj, Gandhi Gandhi in Secunderabad, and Chest, MNJ Cancer and Niloufer Hospitals in Nampally.

This neglect, amid peak summer, may violate the right to life and dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution. The Commission has directed the Medical Superintendents of the five hospitals and the Secretary, Health Department to submit detailed reports on the existing conditions and improvement measures by June 4, 2025.

In a separate case, the SHRC took note of an incident published in another vernacular daily highlighting how an eight-year-old Budavva was abandoned in a forest near Srirampur, with her limbs tied.

She was rescued and shifted to a Sakhi Centre. The Commission suspects property related exploitation could be one of the reasons behind the incident. The Jagtial district Collector has been asked to report on her condition, care, and legal action taken under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act-2007 by June 4.
